Kadena Systems Teams with SanDisk to Deliver Portable
Flash Drive Backup Solution
Combination Puts PC Data Protection in Your Pocket
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 4, 2004 – Kadena Systems, Inc., a technology and licensing company specializing in
data storage solutions for consumer and small-to-midsize businesses, today introduced Cruzer PocketCache, a
snapshot backup application designed exclusively for the Cruzer Titanium USB flash drive from the SanDisk
Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK).
The unique combination of Cruzer PocketCache’s patent-pending snapshot backup technology and the rugged,
high-performance, half-gigabyte Cruzer Titanium flash drive results in the industry’s first truly portable backup
solution for personal computers. Kadena’s technology employs enterprise storage-system methods that detect
and store only changes within files. Unlike high-end systems that use file
systems to capture changes, however, Kadena’s snapshots are
performed by the tiny, 700-kilobyte Cruzer PocketCache application
residing on the flash drive. The self-contained backup solution that
requires no installation; once inserted into a USB connection, the
application and backup are initiated with single mouse clicks.
“Applications like PocketCache are perfect complements for our Cruzer Titanium flash drive,” said Nelson Chan,
senior vice president and general manager of SanDisk’s Retail Business Unit. “Together, the combination gives
consumers a portable, easy-to-use backup solution and an unprecedented ability to take their data with them ---
to school, to work, or on the road,” Chan said.
How Cruzer PocketCache Works
To back up, the Cruzer PocketCache user first chooses one or more folders or files for regular backup, resulting
in an initial time-stamped snapshot with a complete view of stored files. Each snapshot creates a point-in-time “picture” of the folders and files that are organized and accessed just as they are from Windows Explorer.
Subsequent backups are made by pointing and clicking on a backup selection -- backup is automatic and
requires only a few seconds. Cruzer PocketCache’s ability to capture and store only new data typically reduces
storage for documents, presentations and spreadsheets by 40 percent or more. As a result, users can expect to
be able to back up daily for months on the same 512-megabyte Cruzer Titanium flash drive -- and store as much
as 800 megabytes of documents -- before reaching capacity.
As files are modified and deleted, Cruzer PocketCache creates a complete history of snapshots by time and
date, which is stored on the 512-megabyte flash drive. To retrieve the original of a file in a previous snapshot,
the user needs only to select the appropriate snapshot from the archive and save it to a disk or hard drive.
"To use flash drives for backup, you can’t just stick a conventional backup application on it, because it fills the
device too quickly," said Tamir Ram, Kadena’s founder and chief technology officer. "Snapshots are much more
efficient backup method, but a small application program like Cruzer PocketCache is also needed to fit on the
flash drive.”
Cruzer PocketCache is compatible with Windows 98SE, 2000, ME and XP Home and Professional. It operates
exclusively with SanDisk’s Cruzer Titanium flash drive.
Availability and Pricing
Kadena’s Cruzer PocketCache is now shipping pre-loaded on Cruzer Titanium through retail distribution
channels. The Cruzer PocketCache version shipped with each Cruzer Titanium is offered on a 90-day trial
